Mike Hanley in his blacksmith shop with tools and forge dating back to the late 1870s.
The goal of the Owyhee Trails PhotoFest is to promote, preserve and interpret “Our Western Heritage” through the LENS. Western Heritage generally refers to the cultural legacy of the American West, particularly the traditions, values, and history associated with the cowboy way of life, ranching, and the settling of the western frontier.
The Owyhee Trails PhotoFest: professional to first-timers, all thru-the-lens artists are welcome! Show off your creative photography talents no matter what camera you use.
Mike Hanley, a longtime Jordan Valley Rancher has amassed one of the largest historic wagon collections in the West. Mike began restoring wagons at a young age. Salvaging a forgotten wagon discovered in the Owyhee Mountains set Mike on a life-long path of preserving western transportation history. Over the years, he honed his skills to become a master wheelwright, woodworker and blacksmith. Today, Mike’s collection of wagons, stage coaches and buggies are admired as one of the finest collections with more than 30 wagons restored to trail worthy service.
Mike is donating his entire collection to the Owyhee County Historical Museum and Library in Murphy, Idaho. Presently, the Museum is preparing a site to build a 9,000 sq. ft. building to exhibit and interpret Mike’s collection of our western transportation history.
The Owyhee Trails PhotoFest celebrates our western way of life, history along with culture through the camera lens. During September, the PhotoFest will culminate with a Gala and Harvest Dance at the Owyhee County Museum. Festival proceeds go towards building the Mike Hanley Wagon Barn.
